BLOOMING PRAIRIE — Blooming Prairie pitcher Shelbi Swenson was on the verge of her second no-hitter and her fourth shutout of the season, when something went wrong in a 4-2 Awesome Blossom win in BP Monday.

After being unhittable for six straight innings, Swenson opened the bottom of the seventh inning against Waterville-Elysain-Morristown (3-6 overall) with a strikeout, but then the Bucs put together back singles and they finally got on the board with a two-out throwing error that allowed two runs to score.

While it’s sometimes tough to find out where things can take a turn for the worse on an otherwise perfect day, Swenson had a pretty good idea of where things went wrong.

“I was just talking to my dad before that inning and I blame him for jinxing me I guess,” she said. “I tried to keep my composure and I wasn’t really thinking about it until I talked to my dad. But it was fine, we had a good lead.”

Without the no-hitter, Swenson still had a pretty good day as she struck out 12, hit one batter, allowed two hits and allowed zero earned runs in seven innings. Swenson, a junior, also went two-for-two at the plate with two RBIs.

“Shelbi’s been pitching well all season and she’s pitching better now. She’s really taking control of the game when she needs to,” BP head coach Ali Mach said. “In the last three or four games we’ve really improved. Offensively we’re coming around and I think our defense is coming around too.”

BP (7-2 overall), which has now won four in a row, didn’t have any big offensive innings, but it was consistent. Julia Manges singled in a run in the first, Jenna Krell tripled and scored an a Swenson sacrifice bunt in the third, Swenson singled in another run in the fifth and Sam Ivers doubled and scored on a ground ball by Savanah Allard in the sixth.

“We’re getting better, which is great,” Krell said. “We always want to be working and we’re trying to get better one game at a time.”

After playing second base last season, Krell has made the change to shortstop this year and she said Swenson is making that transition pretty smooth for her.

“I haven’t been seeing a lot of action lately, because Shelbi’s doing a really good job, but I like the spot,” Krell said.
