Baseball: Viking comeback falls short

HAYFIELD — The Hayfield baseball team almost had a dramatic comeback, but instead it bowed out 8-7 to Byron (6-5 overall) in Hayfield Monday.
The Vikings (3-8 overall) trailed 8-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when they rattled off seven straight singles to start the frame.
Hayfield trailed 8-6 with the bases loaded and no outs, but they couldn’t plate the tying run.
The Vikings had to throw five different pitchers, including a couple who hadn’t thrown all year, due to their projected starter being out with an injury. Those hurlers combined for 10 walks, while the defense committed five errors.
