Letter to the Editor

More than once we heard the Austin High School basketball players comment on how they fed off their fans, and/or say that the Austin fans are the best. My husband and I managed to make it to all of their home games and agree that the Austin fans are the best — and I’m not talking about ourselves, but the ones who were at the games in the stands around us.

First I should say that we have been Austin sports backers forever! And this year brought us so much enjoyment, watching the basketball team, not only play together as a team, and win, but also show good sportsmanship on the floor. We always felt proud of them!

But in talking about Austin’s great fans, I have to tell you about some people we didn’t even know before the basketball season, but before the season ended, they were helping us get in and out of the stands, since we aren’t young and agile as we once were. They also saved seats for us when they saw the stands were filling up, and we weren’t there yet. They even bought our tickets for the home playoff games, so we wouldn’t have to stand in line.

The people I am talking about are Beth and Pat Schwab. How very kind and considerate they were, and now I am saying a big thank you to them. They are fantastic people. Lucky for any of you who happen to know them.

Mary Barinka was there offering us her help one night, too. And then I have someone else I need to mention, and thank: Shirley Stratton. When the team was going to be playing in Rochester, since she understood our health issues, too, she called and asked if we wanted to go to the game, and if so, offered for us to ride with her and her husband. What a kind and wonderful lady she is, too!

Now, where do you find such fantastic people like these? Right here in Austin, Minnesota!

Dolores Overby,

Austin
