George Heffern, 90

George Heffern, 90, of Spring Valley, Minn. died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at the Ostrander Care Center where he had resided for about four years.
He was born on February 22, 1921, to John and Maude ( Meeks) Heffern in Grand Meadow, Minn. George attended country schools through the 8th grade and was united in marriage to Myrtle V. Hanson on October 15, 1955, in Grand Meadow. In 1958 they moved to Spring Valley, where George was employed by the Hanna Mining Co. After the closing of the mines in Spring Valley, he went to work for Rochester Iron & Metal until his retirement.
George was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and trapping and was also a well-known gun collector. He also enjoyed garage sales and going to the Sunday sales at the Spring Valley Sales Barn but most of all he was proud of his family and his Irish heritage.
He is survived by his daughter Brenda (Peter) Haack; one granddaughter, Danielle (Troy) Harwood; two great-grandchildren Alexys and Ashlyn; and a sister, Lucille Tolsted of Fort Dodge, Iowa. He is also survived by his extended family, the staff and residents of the Ostrander Care and Rehab. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in August 1993; a daughter, Debra Jean; four brothers, Maynard, Dick, Tom and John; and a sister, Mary.
Funeral services for George E. Hefferen will be held at 2 p.m. March 18, 2012, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley with the Rev. Laura Fladten officiating. Burial will take place in the Bear Creek Cemetery Frankford Township, Mower County. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley.
