Austin will run the gamut of entertainment this weekend, including food, music, hypnotism, skating — in more than one way — and much more. Here are a few exciting events to anticipate:
Cajun shrimp boil
The Salvation Army of Austin, 409 First Ave. NE, will hold a Cajun shrimp boil from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Go ahead, help out the Salvation Army while enjoying a spicy meal.
Master Hypnotist Gary Conrad
Things may get a little bit weird on Friday night, as Master Hypnotist Gary Conrad will perform at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, 1701 Fourth St. NW. The event begins with it a 6:30 p.m. social hour. The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, or perhaps more once you’re hypnotized.
Rohler Rink’s animal fundraiser
Please, won’t somebody just think of the animals? Rohler Rink in Brownsdale and the Mower County Humane Society will. The two organizations are holding a skate for the animals event 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday Brownsdale’s roller rink, 316 SE Market St. Tickets are $8.
Foodie Throwdown
It’s time to throw down, chefs. The Hormel Historic Home is hosting Foodie Throwdown, a cookoff consisting of different cultural dishes. Guests can watch the chefs go head-to-head with their skills starting 6 p.m. Tickets are $30, and the dishes will be served at the end.
Fire and Ice figure skating show
There will be plenty of action on the ice at Riverside Arena, 501 Second Ave. NE., this weekend, but don’t expect slapshots or anybody to get checked into the boards. Expect triple salchows. It’s Fire and Ice, the annual figure skating show. Performances will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Adult tickets are $8, senior citizen tickets are $5, and kids 5 and younger get in free.
Other events
Once again, it’s back to business come next week. Business after hours will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Workforce Development Center at Riverland Community College. It’s not all business though; check out the community calendar for a couple upcoming church dinners, as well.
