Alumni Update: Voigt off to a hot start at Augustna

BASEBALL

Brian Voigt, a 2008 Southland grad and 2010 Riverland grad, is off to a hot start for the Augustana University baseball team this spring.

Voigt is third on the team with a batting average of .394 and he’s added four doubles, a triple and six RBIs in 11 games. Voigt also has a fielding percentage of .955 for Division II Augustana (9-6 overall), which is located in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Brendan McCabe, a 2008 Blooming Prairie grad, is hitting .333 with a team-high three homers, six doubles, and 20 RBIs in 25 games with Morningside College (18-11 overall).

McCabe, a catcher, has thrown out 14 runners and doesn’t have an error on the season.

SOFTBALL

Tayla Jones, a 2011 BP grad, has started 11 games as a freshman for Waldorf College (13-6 overall). Jones is hitting .273 with a homer, two triples, a double and 6 RBIs. Jones has an on-base percentage of .407.

Jones singled in a run in the 11th inning of Waldorf’s 9-7 win over Viterbo March 25.

Brandi Schammel, a 2011 Southland grad, recently pitched her first college game for NJCAA Division III North Dakota State College of Science and she had a solid outing. Schammel took a tough luck loss while strikout out ten, allowing four hits, one walk and two earned runs in eight innings.

Schammel is hitting .286 and has an on-base percentage of .500 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs in 14 at-bats for NDSCS (4-6 overall).

TRACK AND FIELD

Austin grad Tim Erickson took sixth in the 600-meter dash and sixth in the 800-meter run while running for St. Olaf at the MIAC Indoor Championships March 1-3 in Macalaster College.

Austin grad Christian Folken finished 15th in the 800-meter run in the same meet for St. Olaf.

Both runners will compete for St. Olaf during the outdoor track season, which begins April 6.

GOLF

Austin grad Drew Osier shot an 82 and tied for 19th place for the Central College White team at the Hamilton College (N.Y.) Invite in Port Lucie, Fla. March 17.
