WINONA — Hayfield sharpshooter Bobbie Stephens broke out of a shooting slump as the Viking boys beat Winona Cotter (9-12 overall, 2-7 HVL Gold) 61-50 in Winona Monday.
Stephens, who had been held to less than 10 points in five of his last six games, poured in 22 points as he hit six-of-12 from downtown.
“I’m hoping that gets him going for the stretch run,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “It was good to see him make some big shots.”
Hayfield (16-4 overall, 8-1 HVL Gold) has now won six straight games and it has a showdown against Kasson-Mantorville (15-4 overall, 8-1 HVL Gold) in Hayfield Friday at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that game will take sole place of the top spot in HVL Gold Division with just a handful of conference games remaining for each team.
Hayfield 32 29 — 61
Cotter 27 23 — 50
Hayfield scoring: Bobbie Stephens, 22; Cole Kruger, 19; Brady Stevens, 9; Brady Kramer, 8; Trevor Anderson, 3; free throws: 57 percent (12-for-21)
