Klaehn’s 3 lifts Rebel boys over Chatfield

CHATFIELD — The Southland boys basketball team came up with three big plays in the last 30 seconds as it beat Chatfield (9-16 overall, 8-12 Three Rivers) 55-53 in its regular season finale on the road Thursday.

Sam Klaehn hit a game-winning three for the Rebels (17-9 overall, 13-7 Three Rivers) with 1.2 seconds left to finish Southland’s four-point comeback.

Mike Goergen hit a three with 30 seconds left to make it 52-51 and Jake Frodl came up with a steal on Chatfield’s ensuing in-bounds pass to set up Southland’s last possession.

“We were going to foul to try and get the ball back and they decided to make a cross court pass,” Southland head coach Jon Thalberg said. “Jake came out of nowhere and made a great steal. Chatfield played great and they probably deserved to win, but we kept fighting all the way to the end.”

Southland, which finishes tied for fourth in the Three Rivers Conference, will now wait for the Section 2AA tournament, which begins March 6.
