The Austin wrestling team couldn’t make up for four forfeits in a 58-10 to loss to Owatonna in its last regular season match of the season in Ove Berven Gym Thursday.

The Packers did have some highlights as Erick Power picked up a first period pin at 120 pounds and Brennen Russell picked up a 10-2 major decision at 126 pounds.

“It feels great to get a win in your own gym, especially against Owatonna because they’re a very tough team,” said Russell, a junior.

Russell took an early 4-0 lead in the first period of his match, and he sealed the major decision when he let Owatonna’s Brett Goodwin escape before taking him down for the tenth point of the match.

Russell has been on a hot streak in the past month as he took first at the Verdman and Plainview Invites and took second in the Mankato East Invite.

“I know it’s getting closer and closer to sections and I can’t be going out with that mindset that I’m going to lose,” Russell said. “I have to keep going out there thinking and knowing that I’m going to win and do everything I can in the practice room before hand.”

On Thursday, Russell was the aggressor throughout his match.

“I’ve been aggressive on my feet and I’m constantly going at it. I’ve been trying to put different moves and I’m not giving up,” Russell said.

Austin’s Mitch Tebay picked up a late takedown to pull within 8-6 in the third period of his match at 182, but he couldn’t get anything else before time expired.
