He married Beverly Eckadol in 1944, and to this union two sons, Victor and David, were born. Elmer married Josephine Carpenter on March 29, 1952, in Buffalo, Minn., and to this union two daughters, Cindy and Bette, were born. After 48 years of marriage, Jo died on May 13, 2000.

Elmer farmed his entire life and was admired for his hard work and all he accomplished without a formal education. He enjoyed visiting with his friends at coffee shops. But his passion for farming never ended, and only his failing health forced him into retirement.
