Education briefs: AHS grad completes basic training

Air Force Airman Collin M. McKay graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
McKay, a 2007 Austin High School graduate, completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
McKay is the son of Tamara Troupe of Brownsdale.
Meeting planned on master’s degree
An informational meeting about earning a master’s degree in education from Southwest Minnesota State University will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, in room 131 of the Ellis Middle School in Austin.
Southwest Minnesota State University will be offering its off-campus master’s in education program beginning in the fall semester, 2012. Cohort groups will meet one weekend per month in Austin, and the degree can be earned in less than two years.
A representative from the graduate office at SMSU will be on hand to answer questions.

Austin native is poetry editor for literary mag
Brittney Heimermann, a junior literature/creative writing major from Austin, is the poetry editor of the Perceptions Literary Magazine at Southwest Minnesota State University for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Perceptions is a literary magazine that is designed to showcase artistic ability at SMSU. Work may be submitted by students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Categories of work include fiction, nonfiction, flash fiction, poetry, graphic novels, plays, photography and visual art.
Education accolades
—Noelle Rose Baker, of Austin, graduated from the University of Wisconsin — Madison in Fall 2011. Baker earned a bachelor’s degree in Education/Elementary Education.
—Dallas Williamson, of Austin, graduated from the University of Wisconsin — Stout in Fall 2011. Williamson earned a bachelor’s degree in Construction.
—Gabriel Benedict, Matthew Dennison, Jonathan Halvin, Kari Johnson, Leihla Wachlin; all of Austin, were named to the University of St. Thomas dean’s list for Fall 2011.
