Best Bets: A time to give

It’s time to do good this weekend. That doesn’t mean sacrificing a good time, though. There will be plenty of opportunity to have fun and make a difference, starting at a hockey game.
Basking in the Bruins
Just because winter and ice refuse to take hold outdoors, doesn’t mean cold has no fun in store. The Austin Bruins take on Aberdeen at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Riverside Arena, 501 Second Ave. NE, but there is more. For the second year in a row, the March for Babies kickoff will take place at the game. Sign up for a team, and make a difference for someone who hasn’t yet had a chance to see the world.
‘Ring Round the Moon’
“Ring Round the Moon,” a comedy play, already showed at Riverland’s Frank W. Bridges Theatre. It’s still going, though. Stop by Riverland at either 7:30 p.m. Friday or Saturday, or 2 p.m. Sunday for more chances to see the comedy, which features twin brothers played by one actor. Tickets are $12 at Riverland’s box office.
Red, White and Pink
Making a difference isn’t always easy. Sometimes, it even calls for getting a little bit weird. That will be the case from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at Oak Park Mall. It’s Red, White and Pink. Nominate your favorite man to dress in drag for $10, and the benefits will go to the Lyle Area Cancer Auction and American Heart Association. That’s worth it.
Cooking tips and trends
Hey, guys, if you dropped the ball on Valentine’s Day, make up for it from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday — or at least try. Attend Cooking Tips and Trends at the Hormel Historic Home, 208 Fourth Ave. NW, and before Sunday know how to make a Mardi Gras southern-syle dish. The class, featuring Josh Diaz of Piggy Blues, shows guests how to prepare a high-class, southern cuisine. For more info, call 507-437-4563.
Taste of Hawaii
OK. Winter hasn’t been that bad, but you still want a vacation. The Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, says vacation is coming 3 p.m. this Sunday when five-time Grammy award winning slack key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr. comes to town. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door and $5 for students.
