Street work assessments may increase

The assessment rate for street construction projects will likely increase for 2012.
Austin City Council members are scheduled to discuss the rates Tuesday night at a work session following the regular council meeting.
In 2011, property owners adjacent to street construction projects were assessed 38.8 percent of the project cost. Council members will discuss Tuesday whether to raise that rate by 3 percent, increasing the residential rate from $37 to $38.25 per linear foot. The commercial rate would increase from $53 to $54.75 per linear foot.
According to a memo from Assistant City Engineer Stephen Lang to the mayor and council members, the goal is to assess adjacent property owners 50 percent of the project cost.
If the council approves the rate increase at Tuesday’s work session, they will likely vote for final approval at their next council meeting.
Tuesday’s meeting will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall at 5:30 p.m., followed immediately by a work session in the City Hall conference room.
