Best Bets: Indoor activities, anyone?
Published 10:01 am Friday, January 6, 2012
The new year has kicked off with unseasonably warm weather. Sunshine and upper 40s may be all the reason for everybody to get out and get active. But with such unpredictable weather, it may be safest just to stay inside this weekend, perhaps.
1. Eagles dart tournament
The Eagles Club, 107 11th St. NE, may be a safe bet for shelter, with fun to boot. That’s because starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, the club is holding a casino dart tournament. Registration is $15 and opens at noon. The best part is that $5 from every participant goes toward the cancer telethon. If darts aren’t your thing, take a few samples from the chili cookoff, which takes place at the same time. Surely, few could dislike both darts and chili.
2. The day the music died
After darts, and/or chili, head down to the Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth St NE. Though the day the music died was more than 50 years ago, Denny Charnecki, Bill Dewey and the DC Drifters are bringing it back, again, with a Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens Tribute. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and as always, $5 for students. Does inflation even affect that place?
3. Southgate spelling bee
Fast forward to Wednesday, but not before remembering to take Wednesday off from work, parents. Your kids have spelling bees at local schools. Southgate’s spelling bee starts at 12:30 p.m., and Ellis sixth-graders begin at 8:30 a.m., seventh-graders at 12:30 p.m. and eighth-graders at 10 a.m. I hope I correctly spelled all this information.
4. Hy-Vee little chefs class
While those students test their word knowledge, even younger students, ages 7 to 9, will test their food knowledge. Hy-Vee is holding its Little Chefs community education class 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dietitian’s Corner inside the store, 1001 18th Ave. NW. Registration is $10; and when all is said and done, the youngsters will not only know how to shop for healthy foods, they’ll know how to make Baja fish tacos with mango salsa. Watch out, moms.
Other events
That’s not all for the week, though. Moms who don’t want to be one-upped by their kids can head back to Hy-Vee at noon on Thursday and learn more about healthy eating in the Chews to be Healthy class. After that, feel free to head outside. Hit the golf course, perhaps?
