Things started slow for the Austin girls basketball team as it lost 53-38 to Rochester Mayo in Ove Berven Gym.

The Spartans (3-2 overall, 3-0 Big Nine) opened the game on a 10-0 run and the Packers (1-4 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) weren’t able to get back into it.

Austin, which shot just 24 percent from the field, got as close as eight in the second half.

“Every time we closed in, they’d respond and it push it back up,” Austin head coach Gary Peterson said. “It’s hard to win when you shoot just 24 percent from the field.”
