The Austin girls hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak when it beat Mankato West (5-6 overall, 3-5 Big Nine) 5-3 in Mankato Tuesday.
The Packers (6-5 overall, 4-3 Big Nine) took a 5-1 lead in the third period when Abby Gallaher scored and Carley Grunewald netted her third goal of the night.
The Scarlets scored two quick goals when Carissa Johnson got free on a pair of breakaways off of Austin turnovers in the last three minutes.
“I wasn’t very happy with that,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “All we had to do is keep the puck and deep and we would’ve been okay.”
West had a powerplay in the last two minutes but never pulled its goalie to get a 6-on-4 break.
Austin eighth grader Mara Overby picked up the win in the net as she stopped 26 shots.
