A rural Fergus Falls man got lost in the Tamarac National Refuge in Becker County on Tuesday, but Becker County authorities eventually located him after over two hours of searching.
Around 6:30 p.m., Joby Johnson placed a 911 call saying that he’d been hunting in the refuge but had gotten lost, the county sheriff’s office reported. His GPS coordinates were tracked through his cell phone and he was told to stay put.
However, some people nearby learned of the situation and also went into the woods to help find Johnson, soon becoming lost themselves. When rescuers reached Johnson’s original location, he had walked somewhere else, and the good Samaritans’ shouting was confusing the situation.
After the volunteers were extracted, rescuers continued to track an increasingly confused Johnson, who had panicked and was actually trying to evade his rescuers.
He was finally located and rescued around 9:10 p.m. Despite his confused state, he was deemed in good condition, and no hospitalization was required.
