The Hayfield boys basketball team showed they can play with metro teams when they held off Rogers (4-4 overall) by a score of 61-57 in the first round of the Tartan Invite in St. Paul Wednesday.
The Vikings (6-2 overall) didn’t back down against a Class 4A opponent as they used a 15-0 run in the second half to take the lead for good. Bobbie Stephens, who scored 22 points and shot six of 12 on threes, hit a pair of medium range jumpers before knocking down a three that put Hayfield up 49-46.
Brady Stevens added a pair of baseline jumpers to make it 55-46 with three minutes left and Hayfield drained six of seven free throws down the stretch.
Rogers had a front line that featured a 6-9 center and a 6-7 forward against Hayfield, which doesn’t have player taller than 6-4.
“Rogers is a quality opponent and this is a big win, especially after we fell behind by eight,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said.
Hayfield will now take on Spring Lake Park (6-1 overall) Thursday at 6:15 p.m. in St. Paul.
