There seems to be about a month-long span of overeating that rolls around every Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas. There really is no fighting it, so get ready to give in for three more weeks, starting this weekend.

  • Christmas around town

Take a look around Austin on Saturday, and you’ll find plenty of church bake sales. Here’s a rundown:

—Christmas decor and bake sale, 9 a.m.-noon, Holy Cross 300 16th St. NE.

Email newsletter signup

—Soup and pie, crafts and bake sale, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Oakland Lutheran Church, 22042 850th Ave., Albert Lea.

—Christmas cookie and craft sale and annual homemade chicken soup and chili supper, following 4 p.m. mass, Queen of Angels 1001 E Oakland Ave.

  • Merry TubaChristmas

After all those soups and sweets, some may be feeling as slow and low as the sounds of a tuba. Perhaps this is why the Oak Park Mall is hosting its second annual Merry TubaChristmas on Saturday, as well. From 1 p.m. on, many community musicians will blast out holiday music from tubas, baritones and sousaphones. Visitors only need to make it to the mall to watch.

  • Eagles Cancer Auction

Get ready to socialize with other do-gooders at 4 p.m. on Saturday before the Eagles Cancer Auction kicks off at 5 p.m. at the Eagles Club, 107 11th St. NE. Is there a better time to give to a better cause?

  • Holiday Tour of Homes

Ready to see some homes that scream holiday spirit? The fourth annual Holiday Tour of Homes runs from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and features five dazzling holiday home displays. Tickets are $10 in advance at Hardy Geranium, Red Cross, Hy-Vee, or available at the door of each home that night for $12: 302 21st St. NW; 506 21st St. SW; 608 24th St. SW; 2715 15th Ave.; and 53663 180th St.

  • Fine Arts Showcase

Not everything happens on the weekend. Riverland Community College’s fall fine arts showcase runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the commons area of Frank W. Bridges Theatre. Riverland music, theater and visual art students will be on hand to discuss their work, and the event is free of charge.

  • Other events

Performing arts season is still in full swing, too. Albert Lea’s Marion Ross Performing Arts Center has the “Dickens Christmas Carol Show,” while the Paramount Theatre has the third annual concert in memory of Ernie Murphy, and Austin High School has “The Nutcracker Suite.”
