A Racine woman’s car was found crashed in a ditch one night after it was reportedly stolen, according to Sheriff Terese Amazi.
Colleen Nagel reported her red, 1998 Pontiac Grand Am stolen just before 7 a.m. Monday morning. She told officers she suspected it had been taken overnight Sunday. The doors were not locked but no keys had been inside, according to Amazi.
On Monday night, Mower County Sheriff’s deputies received a report of a vehicle crashed in the ditch at 79819 Mower/Olmsted Road. The reportee told police the car was unoccupied in the ditch when he found it, and it was billowing smoke. Stewartville Fire Department responded to the scene to ensure the engine was not on fire.
The reportee told police he saw a car with three young males drive by slowly when he went in the ditch to shut off the smoking vehicle. The three young males are considered suspects, Amazi said, and the matter is under investigation.
