Snow on the way?

The National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis., has issued a winter storm watch to go into effect at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A strong storm moving toward the area could drop as much as 4 to 6 inches of heavy, wet snow in portions of southeastern Minnesota, said NWS Meteorologist Zack Taylor. However, the heaviest portions of that snowfall could hit farther east.

NWS officials expect some accumulation on high, grassy areas. Though road conditions may become slushy, Taylor said overpasses and bridges may be the only paved areas with accumulation.

“We’re not expecting too big of an impact on road surfaces,” he said, and added the ground is still warm enough to melt the snow.

Visibility, however, could be reduced to less than one mile by the Wednesday morning commute. As of Tuesday morning, the winter storm watch will be in effect until noon Wednesday, unless NWS officials reduce the watch to an advisory, which Taylor said could happen Tuesday.

The NWS still forecasts dry weather after the storm, with a possibility of reaching temperatures in the 50s by Saturday. Taylor said the next chance of precipitation could be Sunday.
