RCC women hold on to win

It wasn’t the cleanest game they’ve ever played, but when the smoke cleared the Riverland women’s basketball team had a 42-40 win over Gustavus JV in Riverland Gym Wednesday.
Austin grad Sophia Hebrink snapped a 40-40 tie with 2.3 seconds left on a put-back score off a missed shot by Cassie Masberg, who had driven to the hoop and drawn some contact.
“It was very chaotic,” said Hebrink, who had seven points and five rebounds in the win. “But it happened perfectly, (Cassie) got hacked, the ball just happened to fall in my hands and I put it up.”
RCC almost watched that lead disappear when the Gusties hooked up on a full court pass to Emily Fitzimmons, who missed a fade-away jumper just inside the baseline three-point line as time expired.
RCC head coach Suzy Hebrink said the plan was to not even give Gustavus a chance as the Blue Devils (3-2 overall) had two fouls to give.
“We were going to foul as soon as they passed it in, but they drew up a nice play and we were a little slow to cover the floor,” Suzy Hebrink said.
RCC will take the win, but its offense sputtered as the Blue Devils hit just 28 percent of their shots, while committing 27 turnovers.
“It was very frustrating and it wasn’t one of our best games, but we pulled it off,” Sophia Hebrink said. “It’s good to hold a team to 40, but it’s not very good to score 42 points. That won’t win us many games.”
RCC had led 40-36 after Rebekah Aase scored on a put-back and Masberg drove in for a lay-up with 2:40 left in the game.
Gustavus responded when Kelsey Wiebusch got free for a breakaway to make it 40-38 and Jessica Richert hit a jump shot to tie the game with 12.3 seconds left.
Aase had six points, 11 rebounds and six blocks for RCC.
