The Hayfield girls basketball team lost its season opener at Goodhue 58-53 Tuesday.

Goodhue (2-1 overall), which is ranked No. 2 in Class ‘A’, forced 26 Viking turnovers on the night.

“We played all right for our first game, but we’ve got to take better care of the ball,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “We did some good things and we have some things to work on.”

Freshman guard Johanna Bungum poured in 18 points for Hayfield (0-1 overall), which led 24-23 at the half.
