Storm Draayer is starting to find his comfort zone.

The Brownsdale 13-year old recently won his fifth career world power lifting title when he took home titles in the bench press and dead lift in the 12-13 year old category at the World Association of Benchers and Dead Lifters World Championships in Reno, Nev.

Draayer, who has now competed in Reno three years in a row, wasn’t fazed by the bright lights as he put up a Minnesota state record 150 pounds on the bench press and a Minnesota state record 282 pounds in the dead lift.

“I was expecting to lift those weights,” said Draayer, who attends school in Hayfield. “You don’t want to make a fool of yourself when your in front of a thousand people.”

While he’s been power lifting since he was three and a half years old, Draayer is also involved in swimming and wrestling. He loves the fact that power lifting gives him something to focus his time and efforts on.

“Just being able to come here and get out of that trailer park in Brownsdale helps a lot,” Draayer said.

Storm’s dad, Christian Draayer has been a big motivator in his weight lifting. He said that it’s not just about the amount of weight his son can lift.

“This is all I can teach him and he might be done when he’s 18 years old,” Christian said. “But with these workouts he’ll know if he can get through this, he can get through anything. It’s more of a way to teach him about life than it is about weights.”
