Southland’s late drive comes up short in loss to Caledonia

The Southland football team had a last second surge come up short as it lost to Caledonia (7-1 overall) 21-14 in its last regular season game in Adams Wednesday.
The Rebels (6-2 overall) were facing a fourth and four from the 40-yard line of Caledonia with 3:30 left in the game when Jake Frodl found Nick Schmitz for a 39-yard gain all the way to the one-yard line.
“It was a great play and we’ve been practicing it for quite a while just to use it against Caledonia,” Southland head coach Shawn Kennedy said.
Unfortunately for Rebels, they couldn’t finish the drive and the game ended in a loss.
“We had our chances and the kids played great,” Kennedy said.
Southland jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter as Mike Goergen ran for a score and Schmitz took an interception back 48 yards for a TD.
But after the Warriors converted two drives into scores, they took advantage of a high snap on a Southland punt to get a short field and drive to take a 21-14 lead.
Southland lost senior running back Tyler Kressin to an injury in the first quarter and his status for Tuesday’s Section 1A tournament opener is uncertain.
