Redistricting could cause re-election for commissioners

Though it’s far from certain, all Mower County Commissioners could run for re-election as soon as next spring, depending on redistricting results.
County Commissioner Craig Oscarson told the board that, depending on the City of Austin’s redistricting completed next spring, the county commissioner districts may need to be redrawn. Austin officials will be redrawing district boundaries since the city increased in population from 23,314 residents in 2000 to 24,718 in 2010.
If the county commissioner districts change by more than 5 percent of the average population of all commissioner districts in the state, the commissioners whose districts drastically change would have to run for re-election according to state law.
“I’d hate to have to run again so soon after getting elected,” Commissioner Jerry Reinartz said. “But that’s the statutory regulations.”
Each commissioner said they would wait and see what the city’s redistricting efforts hold before worrying about county commissioner redistricting.
“Our board’s an awful good board right now,” Board Chairman Tim Gabrielson said. “But we have to follow the statute. If (re-elections are) the case, then so be it.”
