It was pretty clear what No. 7 Byron was willing to do to try to knock off the Packers in the Section 1A boys soccer quarterfinals.
They were going to take Austin’s leading goal scorer Jake Hagen-Erickson out of the game.

The Bears (9-7-2 overall) stopped Hagen-Erickson from scoring, but they didn’t stop the Packers — who got some help from some new contributors in a 3-0 win at Art Hass Stadium.
“The other team came out just to mark Jake,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “We told the guys at halftime that we don’t care if they mark one guy. We’ve got nine other guys who can go out and attack and I’ve got confidence in all of them. You can’t mark everybody.”
Abinyan Lual, who had played in just a couple of varsity games all season, broke the ice for Austin (11-3-3 overall) when he took a deep ball from Hagen-Erickson, shook off a defender and booted one through to make it 1-0 in the 24th minute.
“It was a nice pass. I was working harder out there and I feel great,” Lual said.
Just 13 minutes later, Austin’s Francisco Torres led a three-man breakaway where he had Hagen-Erickson to his right, but with the coverage shifted to that side he dumped the ball off to Zach Robinson who put it through the net for his first career goal.

“(Lual and Robinson) had a big effect on the game today,” Torres said. “They usually don’t score, but it was their night tonight.”
Torres helped put the game awy in the 54h minute when he shook off two defenders and blasted a 20-yarder into the back of the net.
“I had confidence in myself and I felt like I could score,” Torres said. “We stayed strong and played as a team. It was a good win.”
No. 2 Austin picked up its ninth shutout of the season with the win as keeper Collin Weisert made four saves.
Austin will host No. 4 Pine Island/Zumbrota/Mazeppa (11-4-3 overall), which beat the Packers 4-3 earlier this season, Saturday at 7 p.m. in a Section 1A semifinal.
