The Austin volleyball team closed out its regular season the same way it’s been playing all year.

In spite of the odds, it never gave up.

Owatonna took the first two games by lopsided scores, but the Packers fought back as they lost to the Big Nine champion Huskies (18-8 overall, 9-0 Big Nine) by scores of 25-9, 25-8, 25-23.

“One good thing you can say is that we never gave up all year,” Austin head coach Barry Brobeck said. “They could’ve just said we’re done, but they didn’t do that. We’ve got a few practices left and I’m sure they’ll come out hard in those like they have all season long.”

The Packers (3-17 overall, 1-8 Big Nine) couldn’t match the big hitting of Owatonna middle hitter Lauren Schlobohm in the first two games as she controlled the net.

But when she came out in the third game, Austin put together some rallies. Haley Underwood, who now has 101 kills on the season, had three kills of her six in the last game – including a back row shot that made it 24-23.

Babaye Oja finished with seven kills for Austin and Jenna Svoboda had 15 assists and two blocks.

Austin will open the Section 1AAA tournament on the road next Wednesday.
