Command structure:

The AFD’s two new commanders will officially begin their role on Oct. 11. Healey said having a total of three commanders will improve communication and efficiency within the department.

“We’ll be able to keep better track of our responses,” he said. “A lot of things will improve.”

Improved gear:

In the next year, the AFD will be getting another 12 sets of new bunker gear. Healey said the new gear will increase safety and keep insurance costs down since the gear is not outdated.

The bunker gear in use now is anywhere from six to 10 years old, with 10 being the maximum amount the gear can be used.

One truck replacing two:

In 2012, Healey is replacing one of the department’s trucks, a 1975 Ford with an elevated nozzle, with a truck that will complete the duties of two trucks.

“I’ve proposed we combine our regular truck with the 1975 truck. We’ll essentially take the two trucks and make it one,” he said.

The new truck will complete all the duties of the 1975 Ford and have the capabilities of the department’s main engine — complete with a 75-foot ladder and hoses.

The truck is already included in the 2012 budget and will save the department money since one, rather than two, trucks will be replaced, Healey said.

Better communication:

All Mower County fire departments are revamping their communication system in 2012, Healey said.

AFD will have new radios with revamped antennas and frequencies, meaning clearer, better communication for departments in the area.

“We’re sure hoping it will make things quicker,” Healey said.

Up to par:

Starting in January 2012, between 10 and 12 Austin firefighters will begin the certification process to be up to the state’s standards. Healey said 13 of the firefighters have completed the certification, and the remaining men will be certified in 2013.
