Windy conditions across the Midwest caused gusts as high as 48 mph Thursday in Austin.

The top wind speed was recorded at the Austin airport at 4:56 p.m. Thursday, and several surrounding regions had wind speeds even higher.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse documented speeds of 56 mph at the Rochester airport, 47 south of Albert Lea, 40 north of Albert Lea and 54 in Mankato.

Brad Adams, NWS meteorologist said a front moved through Thursday, which caused a tight pressure gradient, causing a lot of wind.

Neither Jon Hillier, agronomist with Northern Country Co-Op, or Don Larson of Sargeant Grain were concerned about area crop damage. Hillier and Larson both said the beans are still moist enough, and shouldn’t have cracked open. Hillier said the wind was likely enough to blow some of the dry, grouted corn over, however, there were no fields he was aware of or overly concerned about, either.

The weekend will still be windy, with gusts from 10 to 20 mph, Adams said. Moving into next week, conditions should calm down and warm up to the mid 70s. Some portions of western Minnesota could reach as high as 80 degrees.

“It’s going to be a little Indian summer here,” Adams said.

Before that heat wave hits, however, the region will likely go through a frost. The overnight low forecast is 35 degrees, but frost could strike many places across southern Minnesota.
