The Hayfield football team saw an early opportunity slip away as it lost its season opener to Rochester Lourdes 35-0 in Hayfield Friday.
The Vikings (0-1 overall, 0-1 HVL) were trailing 8-0 when they had a drive deep in Lourdes’ territory but they fumbled it away at the three-yard line and Lourdes took the ball and scored to on its next possession to go up 15-0.
“That was a big momentum changer and it got away from us in the third quarter when they rattled off three long runs in a row to put it away,” Hayfield head coach Grant Klennert said. “The numbers game caught up to us in the second half as they rotated guys and we had to leave the same players out there.”
