Third Sweetheart 5K ready to run

Have a sweetheart? Take a walk on the romantic side with them this Saturday.

The third Sweetheart 5K event takes place this Saturday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church. The three-part event is tailor-made for married couples or significant others, according to 5K organizers.

“It’s not competitive by any means,” said Pat Edwards, Parish Administrator at St. Augustine Catholic Church. “It’s mainly just getting out there, having fun and spending time with your spouse or significant other.”

The event is sponsored by Catholic Charities, which started the 5K two years ago as part of an event to celebrate marriage. Organizers hoped to have it last year, but the September flooding nixed their plans.

There’s a 5K run, 1 mile run and a “Sweetheart Stroll” starting at 9 a.m., with race-day registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. The 5K goes from St. Edwards to near Riverland Community College and the Seven Springs development area and back. The 1 mile run will take place around the church grounds and the “Sweetheart Stroll” is a small, designated course where couples can walk through while reflecting on their relationship.

“It’s just taking that time to run, walk together, and have time together,” Edwards said.

Registration is $25 per couple and $10 for the “Sweetheart Stroll.” To register or find out more information, check out our web page at www.austinsweetheart5k.org or call 507-437-4537 or 507-437-6575.
