School looking at proposed 2012 levy

Austin Public Schools will be taking care of business this Monday.
The board will meet to approve the payable 2012 proposed levy, review the process for the superintendent’s annual review and approve the 2010-2011 report on Curriculum, Instruction and Student Achievement.
The proposed levy isn’t something district officials set, rather it’s what city, county and state governments decide to set. Next year’s levy could be lower as the capital funds levy for the 1991 Austin High School renovation will finally be paid off.
But, that could change if voters approve a $28.9 million bond referendum for a proposed fifth and sixth grade school and a Woodson Elementary School expansion project. The expiring levy would cover more than 2/3 of the bond referendum costs, according to district officials.
In addition, board members will once again review a new superintendent employee evaluation process.
The new process involves giving out a 360 review, which is a feedback survey given to employees. It’s commonly used by human resource professionals, according to Mary Burroughs, the district’s human resource director.
The 360 review allows district employees who work closely with Krenz to give their opinions on how well the superintendent does his job without revealing themselves.
The board chair and superintendent chose who to send out 360 reviews to. These 360 reviews are meant for feedback, as the board goes through a final review process after receiving the 360 review results.
Board members will hear from John Alberts, educational services director, about the district’s curricular developments this year. The district switched Language Arts curriculum last year to keep up with the Common Core standards many educational experts are saying will become mandated in Minnesota by 2013.
