Church celebration, fundraiser highlight Labor Day weekend

Don’t take off too soon just because it’s likely your three-day weekend. Even before Labor Day gets here, there are a couple items to throw on that calendar. And of course, there’s plenty of stuff to do next week, as well
1.) The Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser is on its second and final day, today, at Accentra Credit Union until 5 p.m. Stop by Accentra, get a SPAMburger or hotdog with a drink for $1.50, an ice cream sandwich for a buck, and give a kid a miracle
2.) Lyle Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is holding its 100th anniversary with a 9 a.m. Sunday service, noon lunch and music at 2 p.m. This church is packed with history and so are the stories from the hundreds of its members, as some families have been in this church since its beginning
3.) If you’re not going to Lyle, you’ll have time to hit up the Austin Area Art Center from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Art Center is holding its photography open house “Viewfinder Magic.” Though photos are already on display through Sept. 25, Sunday will be a chance to meet the photographers, share experiences and maybe even steal some ideas
4.) The Austin Artist Series will hold a kickoff supper 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Edward Church. The supper is a good time for prospective members, as it is in conjunction with the Artist Series’ membership drive, which runs through Sept. 21
5.) A bioreactor demonstration may not sound like the most exciting thing in the world, but for aspiring farmers, rural landowners and conservationists, this new technique is quite interesting. Local conservation groups will be on hand from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, to explain how buried woodchips can reduce nitrates and chemicals from field runoff, keep ditches cleaner, and ultimately, keep our waters clean. The demonstration is at 710th Ave. in Clayton Township, section 9.
Check the Daily Herald calendar online at austindailyherald.com because among these events, high school sports are underway as well. There’s a game nearly every night amongst the Austin area’s schools — even some on the weekends.
Next week, things are really going to get hectic, too. They’re approaching, heavy and fast. They’re pigs, and it’s the 65th Annual National Barrow Show at the Mower County Fairgrounds. This four-day event nearly stamps the end of summer, better attend it
