Ceremony to remember attacks

Everybody will share something in common this Sunday at the Veterans Memorial in Austin.

It’s the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and Veterans, Austin residents and local officials have special words for the community starting 2 p.m. this Sunday.

Veterans Memorial Committee Chair Norm Hecimovich will open the ceremony, followed by an invocation by Col. Wallace Alcorn (retired). Taylor Osmundson of Austin High School will sing the National Anthem in the presence of all area veterans and the Color Guard. The ceremony leads up to an unveiling of two new centerpieces at the Veterans Memorial: an eagle monument with its wings tipped toward the sky and a POW/MIA plaque. Hecimovich and Alcorn will also have closing statements followed by a military salute to fallen comrades. Visitors are encouraged to stay afterward and spend time with local veterans and patriots. The Austin Fire Department will also have a commemorative display in front of its fire hall throughout the day.
