With their head coach Soner Dogan gone away to attend a family emergency, the Riverland men’s soccer team split a pair of games on the road over the weekend.
RCC beat Hibbing 8-1 Friday and lost to Century 4-0 Saturday.
Corey Anderson had 11 saves against Century, while the Blue Devils (8-2 overall) mustered just five shots on goal.
RCC, which was playing its second match in 24 hours, trailed 1-0 at halftime after allowing a goal in the 39th minute.
“I know this shouldn’t be used as an excuse, but it appeared that fatigue was a factor today. How much, I can’t say,” said assistant coach Troy Stegenga. “Century is very athletic and bigger than we are, and it seemed like their legs were fresher. As the game wore on, we wore down.”
Rafael Bellon, who now has 12 goals on the season, scored twice in the first 16 minutes against Hibbing and Sam Scheffler added two goals as well.
Diego Luiz finished with a goal and three assists, while Dante Ortiz and Valentine Manzano assisted on two goals each.
Ortiz bent a free kick around the wall and keeper Cody Johnson for a goal from 22 yards out into the upper corner of the net in the 80th minute and Esteban Sebastian, who normally plays keeper, took a Luiz corner kick and launched it 20 yards over Johnson to make it 6-1 in the 65th minute.
Rolando Rubio added a goal in the 72nd minute.
“It was a total team effort today,” said assistant coach Troy Stegenga. “The whole squad played well, especially our back four fullbacks. They are the unsung heroes of this year’s team.”
