Chapter 790 President Jerry Parmley of the Vietnam Veterans of America is inviting all veterans of all eras to a free, all veterans barbecue picnic 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at Swensrud Park in Northwood, Iowa.

Parmley said the event has grown every year.

“Bringing veterans of all services from all eras together is what this event is all about,” he said. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 790, composed of veterans from all branches of service in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota, is hosting the event. The eighth annual event offers burgers, brats, sloppy joes, fresh-picked sweet corn, potato salad and of course, lots of ice cold lemonade.

“We always make room for a tremendous variety of side dishes, salads, or desserts that most folks bring to share … especially the desserts!” Parmley said.

This year, an antique steam tractor will be cooking up the sweet corn. Other entertainment includes songs by Brad Grotewold from Lake Mills, raffles and door-prize giveaways. All family members and guests of veterans are encouraged to attend. Parmley mentioned the overall theme of patriotism among the veterans. He said supporting one another is key.

Swensrud Park is located directly behind the business district on Main Street in Northwood and along the river. Contact Jerry or Linda Parmley at (641) 293-5131 for travel questions.
