This year, 1,058 children participated in the Austin Public Library’s summer reading program.
Each received one free book given by the Dean Pascholl bequest, and opportunities to earn small prizes and rewards, including donations from many local businesses. A coveted prize is the reward for completing three weeks of reading: coupons for free treats at the Mower County Fair (including one free elephant ear, no other purchase required), and another free book.
So far, about 700 children have completed the third week. These treats are donated by the fair vendors, and the free book is provided by the Friends of the Austin Public Library.
Average total attendance at the weekly educational entertainment (paid for with the Hormel Foundation and Friends funds) has been about 350. A major part of the success of the program is due to the great volunteer staff who have given hundreds of hours of their time. Anita Bruggeman, our fantastic program manager, recruited a very diverse group of volunteers who are reliable, outgoing, and representative of the community. We could not run the program without them.
Children who read for fun over the summer keep up and even improve their skills, making them ready to learn even more when school starts in the fall. Reading for fun is an important lifestyle habit that builds knowledge, vocabulary, and cultural fluency. Our community is very lucky to have such strong and broad local support for this important program. Thank you, Austin!
