It was a good month for donations at Austin Public Schools.
Austin’s school board accepted several donations from local corporations and organizations Monday night.
The Knights of Columbus gave $227.38 from its annual Tootsie Roll Drive to the district’s special education department for supplies.
Hormel Fooods Charitable Trust through Thomas Brandon gave $100 to Neveln Elementary School for its computer fund. The trust gave another $50 through Gary Rector to Neveln for computers as well.
In other actions:
—Board members approved a resolution calling for a general election this November as well. Six candidates, including incumbent candidates Kathy Green and Don Fox will vie for four open seats on Nov. 8. Angie Goetz, Jeff Ollman, Greg Larson and Carol McAlister are also on the ballot.
—Board members also approved the district’s bakery and dairy contracts for the next year as well. Austin will once again get dairy goods from Kemps of Rochester and will get baked goods from the Sara Lee Bakery Group of Roseville.
Those bids are each a bit higher than last year due to rising food costs. The bakery bid comes at about four percent higher while the dairy contract comes at about 11 percent higher, according to Mary Weikum, director of food and nutrition.
Each bid should be within the district’s food and nutrition budget and lunch prices won’t be increased this year.
