Riverside helps bring shows to Paramount

The Paramount Theatre is getting a little intimate.
Three worldly musical acts will come to the Paramount this month in conjunction with Riverside Concerts in Rochester. Each concert includes a question-and-answer session with the band, where the audience can bond with musicians.
“It doesn’t come around very often that you’re able to (do that),” said Scott Anderson, Paramount operations manager.
What that means is bands like Los Texmaniacs, a grammy-winning Texas-based Tex-Mex band, will share its experiences with the audience in a normally rare artistic experience.
These mini-concerts are the latest in a series of workshops and cultural experiences Paramount officials have brought to Austin. There have been workshops by people like Frank D’Ambrosio, the world-renowned musical star known for his performances as the Phantom of the Opera. Paramount officials also secured educational workshops for Austin elementary schools by the Pushcart Players, a national children’s theater group.
The Paramount’s efforts to branch out aren’t happenstance, according to Anderson.
“We love these things,” he said. “And we’ll definitely continue making that grow.”
Los Texmaniacs comes to Austin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. The band won a Best Tejano Album Grammy last year for its third album, “Borders Y Bailes,” and is traveling north from its Texas backyard to deliver a multicultural flavor.
It’s followed by the Paul McKenna Band at 7 p.m. Aug. 17. The Scottish/Irish traditional and folk group is making waves as an up-and-comer making its name in the folk scene.
The final act is the Guy Mendilow band, set to appear at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 24. The world-music group is blowing up, as they’re touring more, making appearances on PBS and National Public Radio, as well as playing venues like the Chicago World Music Fair and New York’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
All of these acts were made possible by Steve Schmidt, general manager of Riverside Concerts, in conjunction with Legacy funding from the state.
