One of first-year coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo’s goals this season for the Austin girls’ soccer team is not to worry so much if they give up goals.
Saturday evening, the Packers took a step in that direction.

Austin gave up a goal to Worthington’s Monica Soukphilanavong in the game’s sixth minute, but bounced back to tie the game minutes later in the first half and went on to defeat the Trojans, 3-1.
Forward Carley Grunewald tied the game at one just three minutes after Soukphilanavong when she knocked in a rebound off an initial shot from Grace Ewing.
“We need them to believe in themselves,” Camarena-Corzo said. “That they can do good things. They didn’t put their heads down.”
The Packers played back and fourth with the Trojans the rest of the first half before taking the game to Worthington in the second half, playing most of the half in the Trojans’ end.
“Our communication (in the first half) was good, but it could have been stronger,” said Nicole Lipari. “We weren’t playing our game.
“Once we knew what we wanted, it turned around.”
The Packers took their first lead of the game when Hannah Voogd picked up on a ricocheted shot from Lipari in the 46th minute, the first of her two goals in the second half.
“It was a chance of fate,” the sophomore forward said. “Nicole had a really good shot and I was there for the rebound.”

Voogd scored her final goal with just seven seconds left in the game when she took a pass from Ewing and carried it down the left side, dumping it over Trojans’ goalie Alivia Rowley.
Despite controlling the tempo throughout the second half, there were moments when the Packers had to fall back on the play of goalie Abby Gallaher who made several big stops including a key save late in the second half that she was able to get a hand on to knock away.
“We know we can count on her,” Camarena-Corzo said. “She’s just not our keeper, she’s our last defender.”
Austin has now split their first two games of the year, and the team is getting a better hold on what needs to be improved, including finishing opportunities.
The Packers had good opportunities early in the second half to put goals up, but missed on several.
“We definitely need to put one more in the back of the net,” Camarena-Corzo said. “We’re practicing every single day to put (shots) to either side.”
Lipari agreed.
“We need to look for the corners,” she said. “A lot of our kicks went to the keeper.”
Austin will be at Albert Lea Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
