Speed a factor in fatal crash

Speed may have played a factor in a one-vehicle crash that killed a 53-year-old Austin man early Thursday morning, according to Sheriff Terese Amazi.

Randy Michael Lukes died around midnight Thursday when his pickup rolled and burst into flames on County Road 4 near 520th Avenue.

Lukes was westbound on County Road 4 when his truck lost control and rolled into the ditch.

The man’s nephew, Jordan Lukes, 24, came upon the vehicle and called the police. When Mower County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the truck was engulfed in flames. Randy Lukes was the only person in the vehicle.

The Minnesota State Patrol and Austin Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Amazi said the Sheriff’s office will not do an accident reconstruction, despite Lukes’ potential high speed at the time of the crash. Accident reconstructions are generally not conducted when only one vehicle is involved in a fatal crash.
