Sand volleyball tourney to fight measles

Austin Rotaract members are urging area residents to dig their knees into the sand for measles at its third-annual sand volleyball tournament.
Crystal Andresen, international service committee chair person for Rotaract, said the proceeds from the tournament will go to the American Red Cross measles initiative.
“The initiative has been put in place to try to cure measles from the entire world basically,” Andresen said. “We’re trying to raise money for vaccinations. It’s less than a dollar to vaccinate a child.”
Last year’s proceeds of $700 will also be put toward the cause, she said.
The tournament will be held July 16 at Woody’s Bar in Rose Creek. Andresen said there are 10 teams signed up to play, but registration for new teams is still open.
“It’s $75 per team and raffles for prizes will be available,” she said. “Any little bit counts, and every dollar goes toward one vaccine.”
