Neighbors and the stars: Bible school coming for adults, children
Published 9:36 am Friday, July 29, 2011
Mona Lutheran Church and Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church are together sponsoring a free Vacation Bible School for the community from Aug. 1 through 4 with opportunities for children and adults.
For children older than 4, the theme of the week is “out of this world.”
Children will gather at 2 p.m. in Johnson Park near Mona, Iowa. Counselors from Ingham Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp will lead the kids in bible stories, games and activities with a solar system theme.
At 5:30 p.m., children will go to Mona Lutheran Church for supper. Then they will assist in worship by singing the bible camp songs they learned each day. Activities will continue until 8 p.m.
For adults, the theme is “good neighbors,” and time together begins with supper at 5:30 p.m. After supper we will have interactive discussion, concluding by 8 p.m. We will learn learn about what you need to know when caring for others. Each day includes learning about outreach to elderly or disabled neighbors, those who are grieving about losses of all kinds: death of a loved one, loss of a job, disabilities or divorce, loss of a friend, those who are sick or dying, their families and friends.
Good neighbors will be facilitated by Ruby Hermeier. Hermeier began teaching in 1953 and has taught thousands of children and adults, often in the Lutheran church. She founded six Stephen Ministry programs, taught the Bethel Bible series, Parent Effectiveness Training and many more. Ruby lives in Decorah, Iowa with her husband, Rev. Gene Hermeier.
