It’s been awhile since Natalie Nantke last sang in Austin. The stay-at-home mother, who most in town knew as Natalie Gosha before she married, used to sing with the DC Drifters from 1997 to 2002.

Though she’s been in Plymouth, Minn. raising her children for several years, she couldn’t resist coming back to Austin to sing in the show of a lifetime.

“I call this home,” Nantke said. “I was raised here.”

That’s why Nantke’s excited to be a part of the “Age of Aquarius” musical show set for Saturday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m. It’s an opportunity for her to go back to her roots at a theatre she loves, singing ‘60s hits from the likes of Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane.

Nantke’s the songstress who gets to belt out hits that Joplin and Airplane created.

“I get the songs that are the rocker chick songs,” she said proudly.

It makes sense, as Nantke’s been a professional musician for almost 18 years. She’s known for being as good with a fiddle as she is with a harmony.

Nantke’s a part of the Peace Pickers, a country-style group formed out of her Lutheran church, when she’s not busy at home. She also owned several salons, before closing them three years ago when the economy went south.

“I’ve definitely been able to keep myself busy,” Nantke said.

Yet the stage is where she loves to be, where she wants to be. She loves the excitement of performing, of entertaining the crowd, which is why she agreed to be part of “Age of Aquarius.”

The show, partially organized by local performer Denny Charnecki, features several local musicians, including Paramount theater operations manager Scott Anderson and local singer Amanda Corey, who performed at the Paramount last Thursday. The group first performed in April for Mayo Clinic Health System staff.

For Nantke, the show’s harmonies are the draw.

“If I could sing harmony instead of melody, I would,” she said laughing.

As the show draws closer, the group gets more excited. Nantke is enjoying taking songs she loves and putting her spin on them.

“I love to take a song and make it better, but still recognizable,” she said.
