Austin is about to be on fire. Not in a fun, “the dance floor can’t handle me” kind of way.
Mower County and much of southeastern Minnesota will be under an excessive heat watch starting Sunday. High temperatures and high dewpoints will combine to push the heat index past 100 degree temperatures.
“We’re looking for a persistent, prolonged, dangerous heat wave” to affect much of the area, said Zack Taylor, National Weather Service meteorologist.
Starting Sunday, temps will rise to the mid-90s during the afternoon, combined with dew points in the high 70s.
“The combination of those two lead to pretty dangerous heat index readings,” Taylor said.
Heat index readings will be between 105 and 115 during afternoons next week. Temps won’t cool off either, as night-time lows will be in the mid 70s.
The heat watch could be extended to Thursday and Friday as well, depending on shifting weather patterns.
