Austin law enforcement looking for drunk drivers

Austin law enforcement officials are encouraging area residents to find a sober ride for Fourth of July celebrations by having extra officers on patrol over the weekend.
Police Chief Brian Krueger said extra officers are always assigned for the Fourth of July holiday weekend to keep people safe, both on the roads and off.
“Making sure everybody is safe and has an enjoyable weekend is our goal,” Krueger said.
Sheriff Terese Amazi said there will be enhanced deputy patrol throughout Mower County, as well. Deputies will target motorists who are speeding; they will also be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers as there is a weekend-long Midwest enforcement blitz focusing on drunk driving.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half of all fatal crashes over the Fourth of July weekend involve alcohol.
Amazi warned against setting off illegal fireworks for the holiday, too.
“It’s a nuisance,” she said. “Please be careful and get only the lawful ones. Things that shoot up in the air and explode are not lawful.”
Sparklers, smoke bombs and pop snappers are among the party favors that are legal in Minnesota, she said.
