A 23-year-old Austin man pleaded not guilty Thursday to allegedly punching a woman in the leg until she could barely move.

Shaninth Michael Ray faces one criminal charge for felony domestic assault.

Ray was arrested the evening of June 27. His accuser told police she and Ray had been arguing throughout the day. At one point Ray started punching her in the leg, according to a court complaint. The woman said Ray punched her at least four or five times, causing her to have difficulty moving because of the pain.

At one point, Ray allegedly pushed the woman, causing her to fall over her baby and onto the floor. She tried to leave with the baby, but Ray reportedly grabbed her by the hair and threw her on the couch, court documents state.

The woman admitted to punching Ray in self-defense. Ray’s brother, who witnessed the incident, told officers Ray didn’t touch the woman but blocked the door so she couldn’t leave. The witness said the woman punched Ray in the face.

When police arrived, the woman said there have been several past incidents in which Ray has assaulted her, but she did not report them because she was fearful.

The woman was walking with a noticeable limp, according to a police report.

Ray is scheduled for a jury trial beginning Oct. 24.
