The Austin Post 91 Legion baseball team walked away with more questions than answers after it dropped two games to the Rochester Patriots in Marcusen Park Saturday.

The Pats, who have players from John Marshall High School, took the first game 17-2 and won the nightcap 8-3.

“We’re good enough to win when we play very well, but not when we make mistakes,” Austin head coach Bob Stratton said.

The day started promising enough for Austin (1-4 overall) as Gabe Kasak and Adam McMasters had back-to-back one-out singles in the first inning of the first game and Kasak scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Swatfager to give Post 91 a 1-0 lead.

Austin held its lead for three innings when Eric Nelson hit a solo homer to tie the game in the fourth and an inning later the Pats were up 10-1.

Post 91, which had six pitchers take the mound on the day, didn’t get its third hit of the game until the sixth inning when Kasak singled.

“I’m looking for kids to swing the bat and we’re trying to figure out who are pitchers are,” Stratton said.

The second game started out as bad as it could for Austin as Rochester jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Adam McMasters came in relief and held the Pats to just two earned runs as he scattered 11 hits over seven innings.

“I don’t really throw too hard, so I go with a lot of off-speed pitches,” McMasters said. “I just hit spots and made them hit it. It couldn’t get much worse than 17-2 (in the first game) and we battled back.”

Austin also doubled its hit total in the second game to eight as Zach Huntley had a couple of singles and Aaron Goetz doubled in a run.
