ST. PAUL — It was a tough day for Austin sophomore Abby Snater at the Class ‘AA’ state track and field meet at Hamiline University Saturday.
Due to an injury that extremely limited her mobility, Snater wasn’t able to land any of her three jumps in the pole vault and she finished with no score in her first appearance at the state meet.
Snater got closer on each jump at the height of 10-6 but she couldn’t quite land any of them.
“(The injury) slowed me down a lot and I definitely didn’t have a very fast run today,” Snater said. “I kind of knew it was coming but I thought I would at least make height. It was pretty frustrating, but it was a good shot at it.”
While she wasn’t able to compete to her ability, Snater was able to watch and learn at the meet. She saw the best pole vaulters in the state — including Lakeville North senior Nicole Naatjes, who won the meet with an 11-9.
“It’s a good experience and hopefully next year there’s no injury and I’m a little more ready for it,” Snater said. “This is a big motivation for next year.”
Snater’s state qualifying height was 11-1.
